THE
BRIEF HISTORY OF A GARAGE BAND BASSIST
Keith started out
in the late seventies playing rock and heavy metal with several
garage bands on the North Fork of Long Island. Beginning as a
guitarist in high school then moving over to bass, because of
the lack of bassists in the area (and his inability to figure
out what to do with the other two strings on the fretboard). With
his high school friend Russ Mulgren (guitarist extraordinary)
they went on to form several local bands beginning with the word
"dark" (i.e. Dark Castle, Dark Star, etc...). After several years
of playing the local high schools and backyard parties they decided
to call it quits. Russ went on to join Overdose, a big East End
band that were in the process of recording an album at the time.
From there they went on to obscurity with Russ eventually moving
up to Boston. Meanwhile, Keith went on to co-found SlipKid with
a friend of his, Bob Burns. SlipKid was a who cover band that
was fairly popular during the early to mid eighties specializing
in the "big eighties sound" (lush keyboards, flash guitars, and
bandanas). The band broke up after many drummers (They went through
drummers quicker than Spinal Tap), and a few (think Beatles Abbey
Road sessions) personnel problems. After several years of semi-retirement,
Keith started playing with Billy Horne in several different bands
before being asked to jam with Dean, who had been playing with
Billy for a few months. The three of them started what was to
become The Dean Silva Band. After several months of playing the
Long Island bar scene Keith and Bill left the band to pursue their
own musical career and form pRIzE in BOX with former SlipKid drummer
Phil Villani.
